Tips and Tricks to Plan a Visit to your Future Apartment
Planning a Visit to Your Future Apartment
Planning a tour to your future apartment may seem strange, but with a checklist and some questions to ask, you’ll be able to make an informed choice.
What Are the Elements to Consider?
Sometimes, when we start a new job, decide to go to college, or feel like moving to a new neighbourhood for a new experience, finding an apartment where we can live comfortably becomes a priority.
Searching for a new apartment can be overwhelming, but Groupe Accueil International in Montréal helps you make the right choice. They’ll guide you in identifying what elements to look for during future apartment visits and suggest key questions to ask the on-site manager.
After your tour, you will have all the information you need to make an informed decision.
Now that you have chosen the ideal neighbourhood to live in, it’s time to visit the premises. You have made an appointment with the rental manager in the residential tower of your choice, and the visit will take place in a few days.
On the day of your visit, bring a notebook and pencil to check off the elements you have identified in advance to make this visit a success.
Among these elements, here are the ones you should pay particular attention to:
- Electricity and heating: how they work.
- Water pressure. Check the kitchen sink, bathroom, and shower to see if the water pressure is suitable. Also check the condition of the toilet bowl.
- Test whether the windows and doors open and close properly.
- Ensure that the apartment is equipped with functional smoke detectors.
- Evaluate the overall cleanliness of the premises.
- Look for signs of mould, mouse holes, or other visible issues.
- Discuss the soundproofing of the apartment.
- Take the time to open the closet doors and look through the storage space.
- Measure the rooms to make sure your furniture will fit in the apartment.
- Check the lighting in each room.
- Ask about the immediate neighbours.
These few elements will give you an overview of the apartment and help you determine whether it meets some of your requirements. Groupe Accueil International is committed to assisting you and checking each of its apartments.
What Questions Should You Ask?
During your visit, don’t hesitate to ask questions; the answers will be useful when making your final decision.
Here’s a non-exhaustive list of questions to ask the person responsible for residential rentals. These include:
- How much is the monthly rent for this apartment?
- What’s included in the monthly rent?
- Does the rent include heat and hydro?
- What’s the length of the lease if I decide to rent the apartment?
- Is it possible to have an Internet connection installed in the apartment?
- Is the apartment furnished or semi-furnished? Make an inventory of the furniture included to avoid unpleasant surprises. Also check that it’s in good condition.
- Is parking available in the building’s parking lot? How many spaces are assigned to your unit? If there’s no parking, check municipal regulations regarding street parking during the week and on weekends.
- Does the building provide bike racks?
- Is there someone responsible for the exterior and interior maintenance of the building?
- Is there a place to dispose of trash and recycling in the building, or nearby?
- What are the building rules?
- Am I allowed to have a pet? If yes, which pets are allowed in my apartment?
- Is there storage space in the apartment and in the basement of the building, for example?
- Is it possible to redecorate with a new paint colour?
- What is the procedure on moving day? Is there a dedicated elevator for movers? Who should I contact? Are there specific hours to follow?
Getting answers to these questions will help you be more prepared and self-confident when signing your lease.
